Work Starts on $200-Mln Power Plant in Central Highlands
Construction Corporation No1, under the Ministry of Construction, February 8 kicked off construction on a hydropower plant with total investment of VND3.4 trillion (US$21.2 million) in the central highlands province of Dak Nong.
The four-turbine plant with combined capacity of 144 megawatts will be built on an area of 190 ha on the Dong Nai river. Once operational in 2010, it will generate 614 million kWh of electricity a year.
Contractors and local authorities must ensure quality and pay attention to protecting the environment, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung at the groundbreaking ceremony.
In a related move, Electricity group of Vietnam (EVN) also started Thursday to build the dam at the 280-MW Buon Kuop hydropower plant in the province of Dak Lak.
Started in late 2003, and scheduled for operation in 2009, Buon Kuop hydropower plant, the largest of this kind on the Serepok River, will produce 1.45 billion kWh each year. (Liberated Saigon, VNA)
