Japanese and Vietnamese companies will set up a joint venture to build a US$300 million aluminum hydroxide plant in southern coastal Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

The joint venture, between Japan’s Sojitz Corporation and the Nippon Light Metal Company, and two Vietnamese partners, the Vietnam National Chemical Corporation and the South Basic Chemical Company, yesterday April 9 submitted a project license for approval to the provincial People’s Committee.

This is Japan’s first aluminum hydroxide production project in Vietnam. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) is said to be ready to lend US$200 million to the project.

Covering 100 hectares, the plant will house a 40-ha factory and a 60-ha waste treatment facility.

Its raw materials will be sourced from a bauxite-mining site in Bao Loc district, in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.

The provincial authorities plan to conduct research next week to help the investors find an appropriate location for the plant.

The Nippon Light Metal Company is the biggest in Japan that specializes in producing high-quality aluminum products, with 40 subsidiaries and 900 customers worldwide. While Sojitz is one of the largest Japanese trading companies, with more than 600 subsidiaries around the world. (VNA)
