Efforts to Eliminate Undersea Communication Cable Theft
Recently, undersea telecom cables and repeaters have been stolen or intentionally destroyed in the Vietnamese coastal provinces of Khanh Hoa, Soc Trang, Kien Giang and Ba Ria-Vung Tau. These activities compromise national security and disrupt communication between Vietnam and the rest of the world.
The Ministry of Posts and Telecom (MPT) has met with the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Public Security, seeking measures to address these destructive activities in the coming time. The three ministries have reached a consensus for specific actions and measures. Besides, MPT also told coastal province governments to instruct the departments of posts and telecom, culture and information, and fisheries to raise public awareness of the importance of submarine cable systems and to prohibit activities that may harm telecom cable systems at sea.
