UN's Global Compact Initiative Debuts in Vietnam
The United Nations Global Compact network, a voluntary initiative aiming to encourage sustainable and responsible business practice, has officially made its debut in Vietnam, local media said.
The launching ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 26 with the presence of John Hendra, UN Representative Coordinator in Vietnam and Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber for Commerce and Industry (VCCI).
The event is part of a series of activities related to the Asian Forum on businesses social responsibility that is slated for opening September 27 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Global Compact network calls on businesses to put ten universal principles related to human rights, labor standards, environment protection and anti-corruption into their business strategies and operations.
Released in 1999 by former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, the Network has so far drawn the participation of over 3,000 businesses in 60 nations worldwide, including 500 in the Asian-Pacific region.
The debut will benefit local companies and help promulgate their prestige to foreign partners, said VCCI vice president.
Khuong said the VCCI would initiate an open discussion on the social responsibility of businesses, focusing on consequences and benefits for Vietnamese society and businesses. (VNS, Youth)
