Taiwan Compal Electronics Okayed to Build US$500 Mln Laptop Plant in Vietnam
Taiwan’s Compal Electronics, the world’s 2nd contract PC and monitor maker, has got the license to build a US$500 million laptop manufacturing complex in the northern Vinh Phuc province as part of its operations expansion plan in the country, state media said.
This is one of biggest high-tech investment project in Vinh Phuc in particular and the northern region in general, the provincial investment department said.
The plant covering 100 hectares will be located in Ba Hien and Thien Ke communes, Binh Xuyen district, about 40 kilometers off Hanoi, said Tran Gia Long, vice director of Vinh Phuc Department of Posts and Telecoms.
The first phase of the construction is scheduled to be finished by March, 2009. It will employ around 40,000 laborers.
More than 50 investors will supply spare parts for the complex, Long added.
Compal, set up in 1984, is now manufacturing laptops, PC monitors, PDA and cellular phones. The company is running four plants in Shanghai, China.
Compal is currently a supplier for top PC vendors like Dell and Hewlett-Packard.
Compal Electronics Inc. said recently that its second-quarter net profit rose 92 per cent on-year to US$3.251 billion (US$99 million) as global demand for notebook computers remained healthy.
