Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT), Viettel and Saigon Postal (SPT) will jointly build a US$560 million AAG sea optic cable system connecting the Southeast Asian region and the U.S.

VNPT will invest US$40 million into the 20,000-kilometer route starting in Malaysia and ending in the U.S with participation of other companies from Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the U.S., and Hong Kong.

The 314km Vietnam section will land in Vung Tau and have an initial capacity of 240 Gbps.

The construction of this cable network will take 19 months. The system is scheduled to start operations in November 2008.

The proposed cable system is designed to provide a high level inter-connectivity with high bandwidth systems. As a consequence, its capacity can be extended to Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia, India, Australia, Africa and Europe.

The new route will avoid some areas most prone to seismic activity, a serious hazard for undersea cables.

Separately, border army forces have seized hundreds of optical fiber cables stolen by fishermen in southern Vietnam. (VNA)
