Vietnam, Cambodia to Build US$20-Mln Expressway
Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities February 26 met in Phnom Penh capital city of Cambodia to discuss an expressway project worth US$20 million, Vietnamese Agency reported.
The 230-kilometer road linking the southern Can Tho city of Vietnam and Phrom Penh will have 110 kilometers running on the Vietnamese land that has got the government’s approval for construction.
The six-lane expressway, designed to be 35 meters wide and allow vehicles to travel at 120 kilometers/hour, will be built under building-operation-transfer form.
Cambodian Secretary of State Tram Iv Tek said his country’s Transport Ministry has agreed the project in principle and has submitted it to the local government for consideration.
Vietnamese and Cambodia authorities are scheduled to meet again in March to promote the project.
Once operational, the expressway will link the Mekong delta rice bowl of Vietnam with Cambodia and go over to Bangkok of Thailand. This is expected to boost the socio-economic development for the Mekong delta region in the countries.
Vietnam is estimated to require VND430 trillion (US$26.875 billion) to build 2,775 kilometers of expressways from now to 2020, the Ministry of Transport said in a plan that has been submitted to government for approval. (Vietnam & World Economy)
