Vietnam notched up US$475.976 million from exporting 136,125 tons of seafood in July 2007, making on year rises of 39.8 per cent in value and 76.0 per cent in volume, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said.

The figures showed that the country’s seafood exports in July 2008 reached the highest growth rates over the past three years in both value and volume.

Of the sum, export of frozen shrimp and tra and basa catfish contributed US$171.9 million and US$154.5 million, up 8.4 per cent and 94 per cent, respectively.

In the first seven months, the country seafood exports revenues hit US$2.383 billion, up 20 per cent on year, including US$784.39 million from shrimp export, and US$762.79 million from tra and basa catfish export.

The EU remained the biggest seafood importer of Vietnam during the first seven months of this year, with total revenue of US$559.79 million, up 20.1 per cent, followed by Japan with US$449.89 million, up 21 per cent; the U.S. with US$337.72 million, down 13.4 per cent; South Korea with US$174.81 million, up 31.1 per cent; and Russia with US$123.29 million, up 92.7 per cent against the same period of last year.

The VASEP believed that with such sharp export growth, Vietnam’s goal to export US$4 billion worth of seafood products in 2008 is reachable. (Vasep)
