Pangasius Breeding in Mekong Delta Develops at Highest Speed: WWF
The Tra and basa catfish breeding sector in Mekong Delta region of Vietnam has developed at highest speed in the world, the Youth reported, citing the World Wild Fund Greater Mekong.
The conclusion was made at the seminar on stable catfish breeding December 3.
The seminar said catfish production in the region grew sharply in the past years. In 2005, the region produced 400,000 tons, but the output increased to one million tons in 2007, and is estimated to hit 1.3 million tons this year.
In 1997, Vietnam exported US$20 million worth of catfish, but the revenues reached US$737 million in 2007.
But the seminar said the rapid growth has affected both the region’s environment and catfish breeding.
Participants at the seminar called on local breeders reduce environment pollution by using effectively aqua feeds and breeding farms. (Youth)
