Fertilizer companies in Vietnam produced 172,000 tons of urea fertilizer in the first quarter (Q1) of 2009, up 10.3 per cent against the same period of last year.

They produced 342,600 tons of phosphate and 341,000 tons of NPK fertilizers, down 15.1 per cent and 25.2 per cent on year, respectively.

A large volume of fertilizer stocked since 2008 is the major reason for the decrease of fertilizer production output in Q1, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

In Q1, Vietnam imported around 955,000 tons of fertilizers, down 15.7 per cent on year. But import of urea increased by 7.1 per cent to around 270,000 tons.

Localities nationwide are forecast to need 1.84 million tons of fertilizer for upcoming summer-autumn crop, including 400,000 tons of urea; 170,000 tons of SA; 200,000 tons of kali; 160,000 tons of DAP and 910,000 tons of NPK fertilizer.

Price of the fertilizers are also predicted to soar in the coming months, with urea price being VND7,300-VND7,500/kilogram while price of kali, SA, NPK fertilizer will rise by VND300-VND500/kilo. (Countryside Today)
