As many as 50,000 laborers from 40 countries and territories worldwide are working in Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

The ministry said nearly 30 per cent of them are illegal laborers, unlicensed labor situation is popular in several localities including Haiphong and Quang Ninh.

Experts said the growing number of foreign workers in Vietnam, including unskilled laborers, is putting the job stability of the local workforce at risk.

The number of Chinese workers dwarfs populations of Vietnamese laborers at several projects namely Rai bauxite mine in Central Highlands Lam Dong province, the Quang Ninh thermo-power plant in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh, the Hai Phong Coal-fueled Power Plant in Hai Phong city, and the Ca Mau Gas – Power – Fertilizer project.

Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa said the ministry will set up at least two inter-disciplinary inspection teams to key localities in the central and southern regions and some in the north to inspect foreign laborers from early next month.
