The retail prices of milk in Vietnam are highest in the world, the Vietnam Agriculture reported, citing Raf Somers, head consultant of the Vietnam-Belgium Dairy Cow Project.

Raf Somers told the workshop titled “Introducing Vietnam’s diary industry to the overseas community” in Hanoi Thursday [Apr 23] retail price of milk in Vietnam is US$1.4/liter, equal to that in developed countries like the U.S., Canada, and South Korea.

The price is only US$0.8/liter in Holland and Germany; US$1.1/liter in China; and US$0.5/liter in India and Mexico.

Somers also confirmed that revenue of powdered milk companies in Vietnam is also highest in the world, ranging from 22 per cent to 86 per cent.

He said that it costs the companies VND100,000 to produce a tin of powdered milk, but it is selling for VND215,000 at domestic market.

Currently, Dutch Lady accounts for 20 per cent of Vietnam’s powdered milk market share, while Abbott and Vinamilk accounting for 16 per cent each; Mead Johnson, 15 per cent; and Nestle, 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, revenue of fresh milk companies is 48 per cent, with Dutch Lady gaining 37 per cent and Vinamilk, 35 per cent.

Vietnamese dairy product companies only meet 28 per cent of domestic demand, 50 per cent of dairy material and 22 per cent of finished milk in Vietnam is import.

The workshop was jointly held by the International Dairy Federation (IDF), the UN Food and Agriculture Orgnaisation (FAO), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). (Vietnam Agriculture)
