HCM City Reports Over 41,000 Laid-off Workers
Up to 41,773 workers at 192 companies in Ho Chi Minh City lost their jobs as of late May 2009, said the municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.
Among the companies, 126 are state-owned and 66 foreign-invested, the department said.
The highest number of unemployed workers is in the sectors of garment and textile, footwear, electronics and consumer goods.
However, around 17,260 or 79 per cent of the city’s total unemployed laborers found new jobs by late May, the department said.
Ho Chi Minh City, the largest employment hub of Vietnam, now has more than 4.16 million people of working age, which is 67.66 per cent of the total population. Among them, 53.8 per cent are women.
The city’s unemployment rate is now 5.52 per cent. (Pioneer)
