Domestic rice exporters are expected to ship 650,000 tons of rice abroad in June, the Thoi Bao Kinh Te Vietnam newspaper reported, citing the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

The association estimated that 663,408 tons of rice, valued at 282.4 million, were exported last month.

Despite downward trend in global rice market over the recent weeks, export prices of Vietnamese rice remain high as export contracts were signed early this year.

Vietnam sold more than 2.95 million tons of rice in the first five months this year, earning US$1.217 billion, up 66 per cent in volume and 56.4 per cent in value on year, said the association.

The VFA’s figures, however, are much lower than those announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The ministry was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency June 3 as saying that local businesses gained US$1.51 billion from selling 3.2 million tons of rice abroad in the period.

Vietnam, the world’s second-largest rice exporter, earned about US$3 billion from exporting 4.7 million tons of rice last year. (Vietnam Economic Times, News)
