Auto sales in Vietnam dramatically fell 35 per cent on-year to 38,209 units in the first five months this year, the latest statistics of the Vietnam Association of Automobile Manufacturers (VAMA) showed.

On-year decrease was led by sales of commercial vehicles, which were down 46 per cent from a year ago as a result of the implementation of special consumption tax.

Passenger car sales, meanwhile, dropped 16 per cent to 8,297 units in the period, the association said.

The statistics also indicated that local carmakers sold 8,761 units in May, down 24 per cent from a year ago but up 13.6 per cent against the previous month.

Auto sales reductions were reported for almost all VAMA members, excluding Mercedes-Benz Vietnam and VMC with car sales growth of 49 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively.

Although witnessing an on-year fall of 14 per cent, Toyota Vietnam remained the market leader with 8,756 units sold. Followings were Truong Hai Auto, Vinamotor, GM Daewoo, and Vinaxuki.

Vietnam was estimated to have imported 17,200 completely-built cars worth US$302 million in the period, down 52.9 per cent in volume and 54.5 per cent in value against the same period last year, the Government Statistics Office said.

Following table is the breakdown of car sales, market shares and the growth of the 16 VAMA carmakers in January-May 2009.
