Vietnam is expected to request all motor vehicles owners to use 10 per cent smokeless fuel by 2020 to reduce the alarming air pollution caused by the rapid increase of motorbikes and cars.

Currently, Vietnam has 27 million motorbikes and over one million cars, said Chu Manh Hung from the transport ministry’s environment department on the sidelines of a seminar discussing the strategy that was held in Ho Chi Minh City June 18.

Air pollution is one of the country’s most alarming issues as Vietnam expects to have some 31 million motorbikes and 3 million cars by 2015.

Vietnam targets to produce 5 million tons of bio-ethanol petrol to meet 1 per cent of the country’s fuel demand by 2015.

The environment department judged that air pollution in urban areas is mostly caused by motor vehicles. Air pollution is estimated to cost Hanoi US$60 million and HCMC US$120 million. (STD)
