Vietnam is estimated to have exported 8.282 million metric tons of crude oil worth US$3.31 billion in the first six months this year, up 23.5 per cent on-year in volume and down 41.5 per cent on-year in value, said the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In June, the Southeast Asian nation is estimated to have shipped abroad 1.38 million metric tons of crude oil, up 4.38 per cent on-month, the office said.

Vietnam is estimated to have made revenue of US$720 million from outbound shipments in June, up 24.35 per cent on-month, it added.

The remarkable rise in the crude oil export volume is attributed to a considerable increase in crude oil production of 17.9 per cent to 8.67 million metric tons between Jan and June, according to the office.

Crude oil has dropped to Vietnam’s second largest forex earner, representing 11.98 per cent of the country’s export revenues between January and June.

Vietnam plans to lower its crude oil export target between 3.5 million and 4 million tons this year and between 5 million and 6 million tons next year to fuel the nation’s first oil refinery, Dung Quat.

The US$3.1-billion refinery is expected to produce 2.6 million tons of petroleum products, including nearly one million tons of gasoline during this year. . (GSO June 2009)
