Vietnam Economy Grows 3.9 per cent to VND731.6T in H1: GSO

Vietnam's economy has expanded 3.9 per cent on-year to VND731.6 trillion (US$43 billion) in the first half of this year, driven by industrial production and construction and services amid the global economic downturn, the government's General Statistics Office (GSO) said on July 1.
 
The country's economy grew 6.5 per cent in the same period last year, the GSO noted.
 
Vietnam's economic drivers of industrial production and construction accounted for 39.31 per cent of its GDP, soaring 3.48 per cent on-year to VND287.561 trillion and the services sector making up 38.39 per cent, surging 5.5 per cent to VND280.882 trillion the first half, the GSO said.
 
Retail sales and services revenue in the first half jumped 20 per cent on-year to VND547.5 trillion (US$32.205 billion), fueled by the government's stimulus efforts, it elaborated.
 
Between Jan and Jun, Vietnam’s exports were down 10.1 per cent to US$27.612 billion while its imports dropped 34.1 per cent to US$29.720 million.
 
During the period, it had invested a total of VND50.578 trillion of state budget funds, meeting 35.1 per cent of the year's target.
 
It received 1.893 million international tourists during the time, down 19.1 per cent on-year, it added. (GSO July 2009)
