Vietnam Eyes US$761M from Cassava, Manioc Export in 2009
Vietnam expects to earn US$761 million from shipping around 4.6 million-5 million tons of cassava and manioc thanks to higher export prices, announced the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
The figure is completely achievable if export prices of Vietnamese cassava stand stable at US$175 per ton in the remaining months this year, compared to US$153 per ton it averagely cost between January and July.
In the first seven months this year, Vietnam was estimated to ship 2.66 million tons of cassava and manioc abroad, obtaining revenues of US$408 million, up 4.4 times in volume and 2.8 per cent in value against the same period last year.
Ninety percent of Vietnamese cassava and manioc has been sold to China, the MOIT said.
Vietnam currently has 60 large-scale manioc processing factories with a combined capacity of 2.5 million tons of input cassava per year, excluding thousands of small-sized facilities being scattered across the country.
Meanwhile, total cassava cultivation area in the country has to date reached over 500,000 hectares, which are forecast to supply around eight million tons of fresh cassava this year. (Vietnam Agriculture)
