What are Harvey Nash’s advantages and disadvantages when operating in Vietnam?
In a dynamic and fast-developing IT market like Vietnam, Harvey Nash as well as many other companies is coping with difficulties. At the initial time of operation in Vietnam, we encountered challenges in limited language ability and technical skills. Vietnamese IT engineers’ skills were not reaching international standards. However, we recognized this early on and held training courses for new staff, helping them integrate into the internationally-standardized working environment.
Currently, Vietnam is seen as one of the world’s top ten software outsourcing countries and also an attractive destination for IT foreign investors. It is ranked 20th worldwide in internet use rate.

Harvey Nash is actively cooperating with firms as well as state agencies. Last year, the company organised a conference on the occasion of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to the UK. The PM attended and made a speech at the meeting which attracted the participation of 600 senior delegates. The PM hailed encouraging achievements of Vietnam’s IT sector for over the past few years.

Harvey Nash is a reliable partner of lots of Vietnamese IT firms. Over the past few years, the company received the state’s two “Sao Khue” prizes, including “a pioneer making breakthroughs in Vietnam’s software export” prize and “efficient science quality management process”

Could you comment on Vietnam’s business environment after the WTO entry?
The WTO entry has brought Vietnam a fair playing field which helps local firms to access markets with diversified products of member countries. Vietnam also enjoys lower tax levels and faces fewer legal barriers. This is a good opportunity for Vietnamese software businesses in Vietnam as well as other firms to integrate into the global market. The world market also considers Vietnam the safest destination for future plans and projects. Previously, investors were often afraid of latent risks in Vietnam due to many reasons, in particular they did not understand Vietnamese legal documents. Generally, the WTO integration helps investors to believe more in the cooperation with Vietnam. For instance, Harvey Nash signed a deal with Alcatel Solution to implement a project worth US$69 million.

What do you expect from the cooperation between local and foreign software companies?
In the US, we are now operating many offices and here we are carrying out many active trade promotion activities for the Vietnamese market. We hope that the Vietnamese government will hold more conferences for local and international firms to share and exchange experiences. On the other hand, this will boost the bilateral trade cooperation between Vietnam and countries across the world.
