Japan Calls on Vietnam to Try Bribe Taker Soon: Mitsuo Sakaba
The Japanese government has proposed the Vietnamese authority to try its officials taking bribery from the Japanese-based Pacific Consultants International (PCI) as soon as possible, Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba told reporters Mar 3.
Japanese bribers involved in the scandal were strictly charged for corruption, the ambassador said.
“I expect a similar move from the Vietnamese government to ensure the effective usage of official development assistance (ODA) sources,” the diplomat added.
The Vietnam Supreme People’s Procuracy has prosecuted Huynh Ngoc Sy, ex-director of the Management Board of the East-West Avenue and Water Environment project, late Jan.
The trial, however, has not been fixed yet.
Vietnam and Japan just signed the second ODA package worth of JPY25.82 billion for the fiscal year of 2009 Mar 2 following the first worth JPY109.791 billion.
Ambassador Mitsuo said Tokyo Administration will continue giving large-scale ODA in 2010 under three forms of low-interest loans, non-refundable and technical assistance.
The diplomat also suggested private firms should get access to ODA sources like state-run enterprises. (HCM Law)
