Vietnam and the U.K. announced a joint statement on public-private partnership (PPP) cooperation during a visit by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan to the European nation on March 11-13.

The statement, made at the meeting between Deputy PM Nhan and the U.K. Secretary of State for Business Peter Mandelson, said Vietnam considers the U.K. as a key partner in developing its educational and infrastructure projects under the PPP mode.

The U.K. will carry out a training course on PPP for Vietnamese cadres in the coming years, according to the statement. The two sides also agreed on building a pilot PPP cooperation project.

The U.K. has also okayed to provide ODA for many Vietnamese educational projects in the 2011-2015 period through Partnerships U.K, the Vietnamese government said on its website Wednesday.

At the talk, Deputy PM Nhan also expected that Vietnam will receive more the U.K.’s support to introduce its projects to the London financial market and the world.

During the stay, Nhan also met with Chairman of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee Mike Gapes, Under-Secretary of State for International Development Mike Foster and the U.K.-Vietnam Parliamentarians’ League.

The U.K. is now the EU’s biggest provider of non-refundable aid for Vietnam with around GBP50 million per year during the 2006-2010 period. It is also the first bilateral donor in the world to sign ODA commitments for Vietnam until 2015. (chinhphu.vn)
