The PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) has been honourably bestowed the third-class Independence Order and this acclaim is more meaningful when it concurs major national commemoratory celebrations and the 35th founding anniversary of oil and gas industry.
PV GAS was established in 1990 at the initial name of Gas Company from the restructuring of Vung Tau Oil and Gas Project Management Board, with main tasks of collecting, transporting, storing and trading and gas and gas-based products. Shortly after its inception, PV GAS quickly built a system to collect and use gas from the Bach Ho oil field - the first infrastructure system of the Vietnamese gas industry.
On May 1, 1995, the first flow reached the mainland to fuel Ba Ria power plant. After 15 years since that meaningful day, all gas fields managed by the PV GAS have been gradually completed and synchronised. Each year, PV Gas provides nearly 8 billion cubic metres of gas, more than 600,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and nearly 100,000 tonnes of condensate (light gas), ensuring the production of nearly 40 percent of electricity, 30 percent of fertilisers, 10 percent of gasoline products and 60 percent of LPG in the country.
Economically, PetroVietnam Gas Corporation’s gas supply helps the nation save a large amount of money, estimated at billions of US dollars, by using gas as fuel instead of imported diesel oil for electricity production. PV GAS has contributed nearly VND125 trillion (US$6.8 billion) to the oil and gas industry and paid VND23 trillion (US$1.25 billion) to the State Budget.
Socially, PV GAS helps reduce deforestation, protect the natural environment and supply the clean energy for an increasing number of users in the nation. Especially, with its outstanding features and competitive price in relation to other sources of fuels, gas is an attractive premise for domestic and international investors to arrive in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Ca Mau provinces where there are also two country’s largest gas - electricity - fertiliser complexes, which are estimated to cost US$7 billion for construction. In addition, PV GAS also supplies gas and gas-based products to other industries like electricity, fertiliser, steel, construction material, ceramic, brick glass and other industries
Since 2008, PV GAS has started producing compressed natural gas (CNG) to serve the transportation industry and urban areas, helping the environmental protection (reducing emissions greenhouse effect, etc).
PV GAS infrastructure system has expanded and been modernised to ensure quality and safety. Most outstanding works include Cuu Long, Nam Con Son and PM3 - Ca Mau gas pipelines with a total length of near 900 km offshore and over 110 km on the main land. Dinh Co and Nam Con Son gas processing plants have a combined capacity of nearly 10 billion cubic metres of gas per year. In addition, PV GAS also owns a condensate tank system, six LPG storage systems with a total capacity of 15,000 tonnes, a CNG system with many tank trucks with a capacity of 3 tonnes each, an LPG filling system with a daily capacity of 350-400 tonnes in Dinh Co gas processing plant, an LPG filling station with a daily capacity of 400-450 tonnes in Thi Vai Port, and two import and export wharves capable of supporting ships of 20,000 DWT ships and 2,000 DWT. The presence of PV GAS on the domestic market has helped stabilise the LPG price, stimulate the LPG demand in the country and bring benefits to consumers.
The construction investment, specially over the past five years, has helped improve the infrastructure system of the Vietnamese young gas industry, including key projects like Phu My - Ho Chi Minh City gas supply pipeline for the development of southern key economic triangle, Su Tu Den (Black Lion)/Su Tu Vang (Golden Lion) - Rang Dong gas pipeline, Block B - O Mon gas pipeline, Rong (Dragon) - Doi Moi gas collecting project, East - West gas pipeline, Nam Con Son 2 gas pipeline, the second phase of a low pressure gas project and LPG supply warehouses. The five-year investment for new projects totalled VND6,800 billion.
PV Gas has been certified the international occupational health and safety - OHSAS 18001, the international environmental management system standard - ISO 14001, the international quality management system standard - ISO 9001 by the British Standards Institution (BSI). In the past five years (2005 - 2009), PV GAS accepted and applied 250 initiatives to production and management to improve the safety and efficiency of gas activities.
Apart from the business front, PV GAS always attaches much importance to improving the social security. In four consecutive years from 2006 to 2009, PV Gas is a sole sponsor for the V-League - the highest national football championship in Vietnam. The corporation has also built hundreds of houses for disadvantaged people. In 2009 alone, it donated more than VND100 billion to charitable activities.
Since 2008, PV GAS has been operated as a holding company where the parent company signs and supervises gas contracts with oil and gas field operators, implements key national projects, invests in other companies, and reserves the right to govern its subsidiaries. Its affiliated businesses are also operated in the gas industry. PV Gas has completed its corporate valuations and pledged to ensure the progress of privatisation 2010.
PV GAS has repeatedly exceeded business plans assigned by its manager - Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). Key indicators like sales, production, tax payment and net profit are higher year after year, averaging at 10 percent to 15 percent a year. To date, PV GAS has included most of gas-related activities like collection, transportation, storing, processing, distribution and trading of gas. The corporation targets to make the gas industry an economic leader in the country, gradually expand its international presence, hold a high position in the ASEAN region and appear on the list of top gas companies in Asia. PV GAS has been honoured with the first, second and third-class Labour Medals, the Vietnam Gold Star Award and many noble awards by ministries, sectors and localities.
To recognise accomplishments achieved PV GAS and cheer up the entire corporation on the occasion of celebrating the 15-year onshore gas flow, the provision of 50 billion cubic metres of gas for users in the country and commemorating the 20-year founding anniversary of the gas industry, the State awarded the third-class Independence Order to PV GAS. And , PV GAS General Director Do Khang Ninh, was personally conferred the second-class Labour Order by the State.
