Vietnam Discovers 1B Tons of Bauxite Reserves in Southern Province
An Vien JSC has discovered a combined reserve of one billion tons of bauxite in Vietnam’s southern province of Binh Phuoc after exploring two mines of Thong Nhat and Tho Son in Bu Dang district.
The National Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Science and Technology under the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the results on August 20.
The reserves, which are just smaller than that of the central highlands provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Nong, are enough to meet the MoIT’s requirements to build an alumina plant in the locality in 2016.
Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has been implementing Tan Rai and Nhan Co bauxite and alumina projects in Lam Dong and Dak Nong, respectively, with Chinese firms being EPC contractors.
The group plans to start a trial run on Tan Rai alumina plant in Lam Dong province in November.
Earlier, Vietnam was ranked the third worldwide in bauxite reserves of 5.4 billion tons, with 98.2% concentrated in the central highlands region. (VNS)
