Vietnam Parliament Seeks Ways to Boost Manpower Export
Deputies at the National Assembly Standing Committee’s 34th session on September 14 discussed measures to boost manpower export and deal with swindling cases.
There have been shortcomings in labor export management. Lots of swindling cases in the fields have been reported with hundreds of involvers, a report from the government released at the session showed.
By mid-2010, the country had granted licenses to 171 labor export firms, of which only 30% had done a good business, the report added.
“Vietnam should further tighten control over the activity to protect workers’ benefits by raising punishments on violations,” an expert from the International Labor Organization (ILO) said.
The National Assembly Standing Committee early this year set up a team to supervise activities related to labor export. The team will work with agencies from the grassroots to central levels, enterprises and some host countries of Vietnamese workers.
The supervision team worked from January to July and will report the results to the National Assembly at the 8th session in October 2010.
Vietnam sends between 70,000 and 80,000 workers abroad annually.
Currently, around 500,000 Vietnamese laborers are working in 40 countries and territories worldwide. Of them, 90,000 are in Malaysia; over 80,000 in Taiwan and 45,000 in South Korea. (The People, Youth)
