U.S. DOC to Raise Anti-dumping Tariffs on Vietnam Tra Fish

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) will likely raise anti-dumping tariffs on tra fish imported from Vietnam in the period from Aug 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009, local media reported, citing the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The DOC will announce the specific tax increase on Sept 24, the VASEP said.

The association quoted results of the DOC’s latest preliminary administrative review of anti-dumping tariff on Vietnamese tra fish as saying that several Vietnamese exporters will have to pay a tax of US$4.22 per kilo of frozen fillet.

The decision is unreasonable because the new tax is higher than prices of Vietnamese firms in the U.S., said Nguyen Huu Dung, vice chairman of the VASEP.

The new tax will cause difficulties to Vietnamese tra fish exporting firms, Dung said, worrying that many of them will likely incur losses.

VASEP is cooperating with other agencies to request DOC for the tax reconsideration, the vice chairman said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development quoted the American Fisheries Society as saying on Sept 10 that Vietnamese tra fish has made its way onto the annual list of American’s most popular seafood.

The U.S. was the largest importer of Vietnamese tra fish, buying 41,000 tons worth US$134 million in 2009, accounting for 6.75% of Vietnam’s total tra fish export volume. (Liberated Saigon)
