Businesswomen: A Harder Road to Success

4:47:20 PM | 10/6/2010

The road to success for a businessperson is not always paved with roses, but sometimes full of thorny challenges, blood and tears. And, of course, not everyone can reach the destination. On the occasion of the Vietnamese Entrepreneurs Day, October 13, Vietnam Business Forum has an exclusive interview with Ms Chau Thi Thu Nga, Chairwoman and CEO of Housing Group - a successful businesswoman in the construction and real estate sector.

Could you describe the major milestones of Housing Group in 2010?
2009 was an eventful year with the global economic crisis and also a challenging year for enterprises. To recover, we redefined our corporate system and prepared appropriate production plans. Housing Group has focused on its key areas and consolidated an operating apparatus to turn challenges into opportunities.
Most businesses encountered difficulties in finance, internal force and markets, but they took different actions depending on their specific conditions. Housing Group chose to concentrate its internal resources, improve operation and intensively invest in market research. At the same time, we continue to create proper business plans. The consensus of the staff with the decisions of the board of directors enabled us to have success and our market position was strengthened. 2009 was a difficult year for many companies in general but was a successful year for Housing Group, particularly in the real estate sector. This was a banner year for us to develop robustly in 2010. So far, we have converted into to the group model.

Can you overview the current construction and realty markets?
The construction market was also dragged down by the global economic crisis. Besides, the market revived in different ways, depending on economic movements. The development of the property market largely depends on investment supply and demand. Sometimes, the market was heated for a long time but then plunged to a freezing period. While there are many construction and realty investors, market risks are high, thus affecting the psychology of consumers. This field has great growth potential, but it is also risky. Professional investors with good market research, analysis and market risk anticipation will launch the appropriate products in the proper market segment. Therefore, they are less affected by market fluctuations.

What market segments is Housing Group currently focusing on?
We conduct surveys on target customers whenever we introduce new products to the market. Understanding customers’ needs and assessing property market prospects will be the key to success. And, in each market segment, we offer the best products to increase the opportunity for customers.

Currently, Housing Group is concentrating on Group A projects, apartments, semidetached houses and offices for lease. So, our market segments are very wide and attached to added services from construction materials, interiors and added-value services.

In 2010, wooden doors of Housing Furniture Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Housing Group, provided wooden doors for Kim Dong theatre. This is one of many projects commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi

What are your comments on the occasion of Vietnam Entrepreneurs Day?
Today, each businessperson is compared to a soldier on the economic front and they share the common goal of winning. The competition is getting fiercer and fiercer on the marketplace. As we have joined the WTO, the market is open to all economic sectors, to both domestic and foreign forces. The market is open wide for quick-minded people. Without enough effort, they will have to stop the game. A business leader is like a ship captain who steers the company in the rough sea to create jobs, increase incomes for workers, and create surplus value for society.

Many people do business but they are not businesspeople. To become a successful entrepreneur, she must pass a tough road, and sometimes have to accept to sacrifice. But perhaps the best feeling for an entrepreneur is receiving the recognition of society and the trust of the market for developing a company.
Since 2007, October 13 is Vietnam Entrepreneurs Day. This is the day to accredit and honour businesspeople and the time for them to review and strive for new success in life.

Would you mind sharing difficulties you’ve had in a field often believed suitable only for men?
Construction is usually more suitable for men than women and men make up far more than half. In my company, most staff members are male. Although not many women lead construction companies, they are very successful.

Women are not as rigid and clear-headed as men. A businesswoman’s success is usually related to predestined affinity. In the construction sector, work pressure is very strong; thus, flexibility and a consensus-building approach are vital for the company. As a company is like a family, we always have to know how to arrange it in the most scientific and harmonious manner. Indeed, apart from business work, I am also a good housewife when I am at home.
