Five WWF Members in EU Removes Vietnam Pangasius Fish from Red List
Five out of six World Wild Fund (WWF) members in European Union already excluded Vietnam-farmed pangasius fish from their red list, state media reported, citing the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
The move came one week after the WWF committed to exclude the Vietnamese pangasius fish from the list of products unfriendly to the environment, VASEP’s Deputy Chairman Nguyen Huu Dung said.
Only Switzerland-based WWF branch in has not yet followed the decision.
Vietnam will ask the WWF to order its Swiss unit to respect the decision, Dung was quoted as saying by the Vietnam News Agency.
The WWF has signed a long-term cooperation memorandum of understanding with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s General Department of Fisheries to promote the latter’s pangasius fish.
Vietnam has exported 650,000 tons of pangasius fish per annum over the years. The volume is expected to increase to 800,000 tons in the next five years. (News)
