Local car manufacturers sold 112,224 vehicles in 2010, falling 6% from a year earlier, the Vietnam Association of Automobile Manufacturers (VAMA) said in a report.

On-year decrease was led by sales of SUV/MPV/Cross-over vehicles, which were down 13% at 24,309 units last year. The sales of commercial vehicles and passenger cars dropped 4% and 3%, respectively.

Japanese automaker Toyota still topped among local carmakers with sales of 31,135 vehicles last year, up 3% on-year. The runner-up is Truong Hai Auto with sales of 26,047 cars, representing the sharpest on-year increase of 20%.

Falls in car sales were reported for 12 out of total 17 members of VAMA. Top decliners are Mekong, Hino and Isuzu.

Car sales in December were down 17% on year at 12,485 units, but the figure was higher as compared to 11,198 vehicles in November.

Automobile traders attributed the rise in car sales to a Ministry of Finance policy that will raise registration fees to 20% from the beginning of February. In addition, the number plate fee will increase by ten times to VND20 million per car.

The General Department of Customs is also going to apply new tax rates on imported cars, which has caused a further rush.
