Although it has only recently joined the Vietnam market, Strategic Marine Vietnam has constantly grown, mastered advanced shipbuilding technology and affirmed its brand and reputation in the international shipbuilding market. Moreover, Vietnam Strategic Marine promises to gain more impressive achievements with a series of major ongoing projects. The following talk with Mr Michael McCourt, General Manager, will help us visualise the secret of success as well as the future direction of Strategic Marine Vietnam.
What are the strong points of Strategic Marine Group in general and Strategic Marine Vietnam in particular?
Strategic Marine is one of the leading companies in the shipbuilding industry, specializes in aluminum and steel vessels for the offshore oil field, military and paramilitary sectors. Strategic Marine Group operates 4 shipyards in Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and Mexico.
In 2007, we started our investment at the Dong Xuyen Industrial Zone (Vung Tau city), specialising in building large and custom-built aluminum and steel vessels; offering maritime solutions to clients, including refit and repair. We are currently implementing many valuable contracts. Depending on customers’ requirements, we can build ships and boats according to standards of prestigious institutions in different countries. Since establishing ourselves, we have constantly invested in upgrading factories and machinery; improving human resources and enhancing the capacity of business and production. Our products are of the largest tonnage and highest quality, which proves our great efforts and determination in satisfying customer requirements.
In 2010, we delivered a number of vessels to international clients, including a 143 metre Dive Support Vessel, a 48 metre landing craft for an Australian offshore company, components for the Nhon Trach Power Station and floating pontoons for a LNG development in Australia. We also started to build new vessels for other global customers. In the first 6 months of 2011, we provided 3 hulls to our shipyard in Singapore for their completion as whole vessels, commenced 8 out of a total of 70 fabrication blocks for Saigon Offshore Company, and many other projects. Now, we expect to deliver a 27 metre vessel in November and have three other vessels under construction for delivery next year.
Strategic Marine Vietnam has now gained a strong reputation in the international shipbuilding market. What are the key elements to the company’s success?
At each step of Strategic Marine Vietnam since its establishment, there are positive contributions of the leaders and employees who are dedicated, energetic, dare to think independently and bear responsibility. We have easily accessed the workforce in a growing maritime market like Vietnam and could take advantage of available local resources. The engineers and workers here are trained to be self disciplined and to improve their own skills in work, especially the workers building the high quality aluminum vessels.
Besides, we do not forget the mission of training and continuously enhancing the quality of our team. We are currently focusing on building aluminum vessels, but this industry in Vietnam has not developed well; hence, we have been focusing on high-quality worker training to meet the development demand.
What are the differences in the services and solutions which your company offers the customers?
We supply solutions as per our customers’ demands. Our products are quite diversified according to customers’ requirements.
We are confident in affirming that what we build is what the customer wants. All our customers so far are international organisations, so we always follow international standards in building products for them.
Considering people are a valuable asset of the company, could you share with us about the human resources development policy in Strategic Marine Vietnam?
There is a determinant in the success of Strategic Marine Vietnam: manpower. We have built a working environment which is rich in humanity and always creates favorable conditions for staff to study and improve their knowledge. Currently, we have about 500 skillful and highly qualified workers, 10 foreign experts in roles of management and supervision; 20 Filipino workers majored in aluminum vessels and the rest are Vietnamese employees. Our staff are not only well-paid but also working in a dynamic working environment and fully respected.
To be one of the competitive shipyards, we continuously improve the quality of our human resources.
Due to international competition, we need the best quality human resources for training and are gradually replacing our expatriates. Human resources development strategy of Strategic Marine Vietnam expresses its respect of creative factors in international quality products and encourages its employees to be utterly dedicated to work, establishing the well-known brand of Strategic Marine Vietnam.
Could you share the development strategy of the company?
We have developed an impressive strategy for development in the 5 year period from 2011 to 2015, not only for Strategic Marine Vietnam but also for the whole group. As the biggest shipyard in group, Strategic Marine Vietnam will play a significant role. We are expecting the key indexes from the shipyard to continue growing, elevating its prestige and trade mark. With our current manpower and financial resources, we firmly believe we will grow well in the coming years, constantly expand, offer more jobs for workers and contribute actively to the economic development process of the province.
Why did you select Ba Ria – Vung Tau to establish the company? Is there any particular advantage of Ba Ria - Vung Tau that other provinces don’t have?
The advantage of Vung Tau is a strategic location, near Ho Chi Minh City and close to our customers, where the maritime and oilfield industries are highly developed in Vietnam. It will lead to more business opportunities for our enterprise. Besides, the infrastructure is also quite uniform. Therefore, we decided to select Ba Ria - Vung Tau province as the place to build a shipyard for developing our production and business activities
Do you have any comments on the current investment environment and policies in Ba Ria - Vung Tau ?
I believe the investment environment and policies of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province are very good and constantly improving. The province’s competitiveness index has continuously increased during the last period. Ba Ria - Vung Tau has been chosen by many enterprises, including Strategic Marine Vietnam, as a place where we believe that we can invest and develop.
What impressed me most is the attitude of the Ba Ria - Vung Tau’s authority. They are very open-hearted and sincerely listen to the opinions of the enterprises. They are always interested in removing constraints on enterprises, creating good conditions to help enterprises achieve the most benefit for their development and competitive improvement. This is a strength that Ba Ria - Vung Tau should continue to develop in the future, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau will carry on as an ideal destination for investors.
What would you propose to the local authority in order to make the operation and business of Strategic Marine Vietnam and others enterprises more convenient and the more effective?
Perhaps the biggest proposal is about permit matters, in addition to the training for manpower's workmanship improvement. The fabrication industry of Vietnam in general and Ba Ria - Vung Tau in particular is quite developed, but the workforce is still very young and inexperienced. Therefore, we would expect that the authority will pay more attention to the training and improvement of human resources quality as well as creating the most favorable conditions for enterprises and investors who wish to take part in the process of building these outstanding human resources, including Strategic Marine Vietnam.
