Dong Phuong Knit-wear Co.: Facing Economic Integration

"International economic integration is both an opportunity and a challenge for the Vietnamese textile-garment sector" said Mr. Ma Van Khanh, marketing manager of the Dong Phuong Knit-wear Company. The company is a State-owned enterprise established since 1972 and continues to play a key role in the knit-wear industry.

In 2003, the turnover of the company was VND90 billion with 67 per cent in export value. In preparation for WTO accession, the company has commenced the development of its trademark, though it is rather late in comparison with other companies. “We know we are late but we are sure of the effectiveness of our trademark,” Mr. Khanh added.

Although the textile sector in general is facing certain difficulties, the Dong Phuong company has decided to invest in equipment and fashion design to meet the demand of the domestic market and compete with products of a similar nature.

The company is expanding its export markets, maintaining traditional clients and developing principle products, which have resulted in an increase in its export value in 2004 by 20 per cent over that of 2003.

In the coming years, the company will develop its trademark in the local market and expand its export markets with its main products including Pile and Double Face. In 2005, the company will introduce several new products meeting demand at home and abroad.
