Sharp Increase in Exports to Germany
The Ministry of Trade said that in the first months of this year the volume of exported goods from Vietnam to Germany saw a drop of 14 per cent, but that this fall was counteracted by the increase on the price of some goods.
The price of tea, for example, rose to similar levels to products of the same kind from other countries. Rubber saw an increase of 46.3 per cent; textiles and garments, 38.7 per cent; handicrafts, 31.8 per cent, seafood, 29.3 per cent; coffee, 28.4 per cent; and footwear, 18.3 per cent. It appears that the Germany market is particularly interested in Vietnam’s rice and pepper products.
However, Vietnam’s pepper faces disadvantages in price due to a traditional lack of quality. To build up the prestige and price of pepper, the Ministry of Trade advised enterprises to ensure the quality of their products. Concerning rice, enterprises should process and pack before shipping to European consumers and Asian restaurants so as to increase rice exports to Germany and compete with the dominant Thai product.
