PM Receives US Congressman
PM Nguyen Tan Dung, on January 11, welcomed US Congressman Robert Filner who is on a working visit to Vietnam.
PM Dũng treasured Congressman Robert Filner’s assistance to Vietnamese Agent Organge (AO) victims and the latter’s close cooperation with Vietnamese partners in surmounting the consequences of AO/dioxine.
The Government chief also praised the Congressman’s effort to bring the AO issue to open discussions in the US Senate and House of Representative.
Mr. Dung said that AO/dioxine has caused severe impacts on the environment and health of Vietnamese people. Despite numerous difficulties, the Vietnamese Government has allocated US $45 million to back AO victims and detoxicate AO-affected areas.
The Government chief went on to say that each year Vietnam witnesses over 1,000 deaths caused by bombs and mines and around 3 million others are exposed to AO/dioxin.
Mr. Dung hoped that the US Congress and Government would further understand the legacy and take more responsible actions to address the war aftermath.
Congressman Robert Filner affirmed that he would do his utmost to make the US Congress, Government and people to be aware of the severe consequences.
Mr. Robert Filner believed that on the basis of mutual goodwill and friendly cooperation, Vietnam and the US would enjoy new developments in the bilateral ties in the future.
