Vietnam expects to keep the US as its biggest tuna importer after learning that the latter will import more tunas from Asia this year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), in 2011, the US beat the EU to become Vietnam’s biggest and most stable tuna importer. It made imports of over US$170 million, up 31.8 percent against 2010.

Last year, tunas brought in over US$379.3 million for Vietnam, a year on year increase of 29.4 percent. High exports were recorded in Japan, Canada, Israel, the US and Switzerland.

VASEP has said tuna traders and exporters should intensify investment in building well-equipped freezer storages and use large vessels to purchase tunas immediately after they are caught to ensure their freshness and supply essential goods to fishermen at sea.
