The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) recently organised a workshop to launch the project "Cleaner Production and Waste Management Training for Enterprises in Vietnam". This is the project implemented by the Office for Sustainable Business Development (SDforB) of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) under the sponsorship of Dow Chemical International Co., Ltd., and with technical assistance from the Centre for Environment and Cleaner Production (CECP) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The event is the channel for information exchanges between enterprises and government agencies in the construction of efficient business environments towards sustainable development in Vietnam.
At the workshop, almost all participants noted that for over 15 years, Vietnam has been trying to implement programmes and projects related to Cleaner Production and Waste Management (CPWM) helping to raise the capacity of the business community on both aspects of development including growth and ecological environment preservation.
In fact, today, more and more Vietnamese enterprises are aware of the importance of Cleaner Production and Waste Management. More and more businesses find that improving production efficiency (in particular the application of cleaner production and waste management efficiently in the production line and operational processes within the organization) becomes the mission for enterprises to achieve sustainable development, contribute to improving competitiveness and advancing international integration. However, specific knowledge and action on cleaner production and waste management are still very limited, especially in the small and medium-sized enterprises.
According to Dr Doan Duy Khuong, VCCI Vice President, cleaner production and waste management is important and essential to sustainable business development; strengthening the credibility and reputation of the business in the context of the consumers always appreciating the protection of human health and the surrounding environment. Experience shows that, in the medium and long term, if the business focuses on integrating environmental protection in its business strategy, it will improve production efficiency. Dr Doan Duy Khuong also stressed that, in that joint effort, VCCI will always accompany the businesses to implement many initiatives to improve their competitiveness through specific actions such as: communication and training in order to raise awareness, knowledge and skills of the business, mobilizing the Vietnamese business community and international cooperation and action to improve the business environment.
The representative of Dow Chemical International (DCIL) hopes it will improve production efficiency, increase competitiveness, and improve the environment and safety awareness for Vietnamese manufacturers. So, it will create a sustainable and constantly developed economy. He also stressed that Vietnam is on the path of economic booming, many Vietnamese manufacturers use Dow products in many different fields including arrays of coating materials, water treatment, materials packaging, electronic materials ... The advancement of chemistry and the solution of the Dow is located right in the heart of Vietnam’s prosperous economic development and DCIL commits to maintain this growth and hopes the advanced technology of Dow will contribute positively to the development of production in the next period, support sustainable development and to improve the daily life of Vietnamese people.
In addition, about 70 businesses from various industries related to manufacturing processes and services: textiles, oil and gas, mining, pharmaceutical, food processing, feed, electricity, transportation, construction, services, technology automotive, motorcycle, engineering, railways… made comments about the project, the advantages and difficulties of the project implementation. On November 14th, the workshop was held in Ho Chi Minh City attracting the attention of many companies and plants coming from the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Dong Nai and Binh Duong as well as participation of business associations.
It is known that the main activities of the project is training and communication, through which, it will support domestic and foreign enterprises operating in Vietnam operating in the field of industrial production or waste service providers affecting the environment to raise awareness and a deeper understanding of cleaner production to improve production efficiency, minimize negative impacts on the environment and society towards sustainable development manner. The programme will provide enterprises with key tools to improve the capacity of coping with the problem of waste management and improving production efficiency through the application of cleaner production cycle in process of creating products and services of businesses in industries and different business. Businesses will have to change perspective and business strategy to establish a sustainable environment, including a proactive approach to cleaner production and waste management right from the source.
