With strong investment for infrastructure development, tourist destinations and major cultural events, the tourism industry of Bac Lieu province has achieved remarkable results in the last two years.
1 million tourist arrivals in 2014
Tourism investment projects deployed have changed the face of Bac Lieu tourism, including Nha Mat - artificial beach, God of Mercy Statue Zone, Ho Nam ecotourism site together with cultural buildings and historical monuments like Uncle Ho Temple, Southern Folk Singing Monument, Musician Cao Van Lau Monument, Hung Vuong Square and Noc Nang Monument. Tourism infrastructure investment also created many new tourism products of high quality and high competitiveness.
Content-rich tourism promotion is organised together with local, provincial, regional, national and international cultural and sport events to introduce Bac Lieu tourism. The province also attends and organises many trade fairs and festivals to popularise its tourism via mass media.
Every year, Bac Lieu has plans to open professional tourism training courses for tourism workers and civil servants, to raise management level, professional knowledge, and communication skills of tourism workers to better serve tourists. The province also mobilises the people to live “hospitable, civilised and polite” life to develop tourism.
These efforts have pushed up the sustainable tourism development of Bac Lieu province. The province welcomed 423,000 tourists (with 130,000 tourists using accommodation services) and raked in gross revenue of VND385 billion (revenues of hotels and restaurants were VND130 billion) in 2010. In 2014, the province served 973,000 visitors (with nearly 300,000 tourists using accommodation services), more than doubling arrivals in 2010 and representing an annual growth rate of 20.7 percent, and fetched VND857 billion of revenue (restaurants and hotels reported revenue of VND300 billion), representing an increase of 210 percent over 2010 and an average annual growth of 20.5 percent.
Developing specific tourism products
Bac Lieu province has rich tourism potential. In addition to garden-based tourism and water world discovery as other localities in the Mekong Delta, Bac Lieu has its own unique features like “Bac Lieu Dandy” legendary, “Miss husband at night” song, historical and cultural relic system, religious institutions and popular beliefs. The province also has many large-scale, famous projects, including coastal wind-power farms in Vinh Trach Dong Commune, Bac Lieu Town. Besides, Bac Lieu province lies on National Highway 1A which provides favourable conditions for the province to develop tourism.
To tap its existing advantages, the tourism sector of Bac Lieu has introduced some measures to raise its competitiveness like intensifying “tourism communication and promotion” to raise the awareness of authorities, branches and people in the position, role and importance of tourism in economic development, and applying “everyone does tourism” philosophy in tourism development investment. Bac Lieu province has also boosted cooperation in tourism promotion with localities with strong tourism industry in the country.
Particularly, the Mekong Delta Tourism Association recognised five typical tourism products of Bac Lieu province as typical tourism destinations of the Mekong Delta. The province expects that one or two more tourism destinations will be recognised as typical tourism destinations of the Mekong Delta from now till the end of 2015. Bac Lieu will support villages with typical traditional trades to become tourism destinations like Hong Dan and Phuoc Long bamboo weaving villages and Dong Hai salt village.
