The Ministry of Planning and Investment recently collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to organise Start-up Workshop on rolling-out of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in Vietnam with the theme “The SDGs - Everyone’s business”.
According to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen The Phuong, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted at the Summit of the United Nations held on 25-27 September 2015 in New York with 17 general objectives and 169 specific targets. The goal of the programme is seen as a global orientation and each country needs to set out the objectives consistent with its context. At the same time, the country will have to decide how to integrate these indicators into the process of global sustainable development planning and building strategies and policies of the country.
According to Deputy Minister Nguyen The Phuong, the Government and the leaders of Vietnam always consider the objectives of sustainable development as important criteria throughout the course of its economic development. Vietnam is viewed by the international community as a nation which actively implements Agenda 21 on sustainable development of the United Nations through the promulgation of Agenda 21 Vietnam and Sustainable Development Strategy and 2011-2020. Vietnam has also been rated as one of the countries successfully implementing the Millennium Development Goals, creating enormous change for people.
More about this topic, Ms Nguyen Le Thuy, Deputy Director of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Deputy Director of the Office for Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, said the main purpose of Agenda 2030 is to provide a new global framework built on the basis of completing Millennium development Goals (MDGs) and Agenda 21 on sustainable development. Agenda 2030 identifies 17 common objectives including: Ending all forms of poverty everywhere; Termination of hunger and ensure food security and improve nutrition, promote sustainable agriculture; Ensure healthy life and promote the welfare of all people of all ages; Ensure comprehensive quality education and promote social welfare for all people; Achieving gender equality, empowerment of women and girls; Ensure availability, sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; Make sure people have access to energy resources prices in affordability, reliability, sustainability and modernization; Promote sustainable economic growth, comprehensive, productive employment, adequate for everyone; Build solid infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization, comprehensive and enhance innovation; Reduce inequalities within and between countries; Construction of urban communities and comprehensive, secure, resilient and sustainable; Ensure production model and sustainable consumption; Emergency action to respond to climate change and its impacts; Conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, the oceans to sustainable development; Protect, restore and enhance the sustainable use of Earth's ecosystems, sustainable forest management, the fight against deforestation, prevent and restore soil depletion and degradation of biodiversity learn; Encourage associations for peace and social cover implementation of sustainable development, facilitating access to justice for everyone and build effective institutions, with accountability and coverage full; Strengthening the implementation modalities and promoting global partnership for sustainable development.
According to the international experts, Agenda 2030 covers vast and comprehensive policies with 5 principles including End poverty, develop the potential of human and strengthen human and equality; Protect the planet from degradation, promote consumption and sustainable production, natural resource management, action for climate change; Ensure people enjoy prosperous life and ensure economic, social and technological progress; Build peaceful and justice society for people with no longer fear and violence; Mobilize the necessary resources, to strengthen the global partnership, strengthen solidarity, based on the participation of all countries, groups and people. Also, in the judgement of many countries in the world, Vietnam is regarded as a model of the achievements in implementing the MDGs, this has created major, fundamental changes in the quality of life for the people Vietnam, Thuy said.
Ms Pratibha Mehta, Resident Coordinator of the UNDP in Vietnam, said the breakthrough thinking will help identify global objectives and milestone goals set in the approach to development global growth. Accordingly, Agenda 2030 has launched an integrated package, extensive, comprehensive view to creating lasting global transformation. This programme is built, approved by the member states of the United Nations and received political support at the level of heads of state including Vietnam.
In addition, as a representative (UNDP) in Vietnam, Ms Pratibha Mehta reaffirmed that the United Nations in Vietnam will contribute further support to the Government of Vietnam to integrate the new goals. Parallel to that, UNDP will support Vietnam at the highest level complete the objectives of sustainable development, which is also one of the key tasks of this agency in Vietnam in the coming years, Ms Pratibha Mehta said.
