The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Vietnam recently signed a loan agreement worth US$231.3 million that will help Vietnam construct and upgrade its power transmission networks in the southern region. This is the third loan in the 10-year lasting Power Transmission Investment Programme approved by the ADB in 2011.

Project 3 will add 60 km of 500 kV, 64 km of 220 kV, and 3,700 MVA of transmission capacity in southern Vietnam, enabling electricity transmission from the power plant cluster in the southwest region to the national grid system, and improving the reliability and stability of power supply to major economic centres in the southern region.

The last project, tranche 4, which is being prepared and is expected to be approved in 2017, will focus on a 500 kV transmission line and substations in the southern region.

Taking this investment programme into account, ADB has supported Vietnam to develop its nationwide electricity transmission system, including 1,200 km of 500kV, 670 km of 220kV, and 10,000 MVA of substations. ADB has also supported National Power Transmission Corporation to build project management capacity.
