EVN to Invest US$13.8Bln in Power Plant Construction in 2006-2010

The State-owned corporation Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will invest nearly US$13.8 billion to build and upgrade 52 power plants with the total capacity of 7,574MW from 2006 to 2010.

The project will include 42 hydropower plants, four gas-fueled thermoelectricity plants and six coal-fueled thermoelectricity plants.

The investment plan is aimed to satisfy the growing demand for electricity, forecast to reach 93 billion kWh by 2010, of which, hydropower sources will account for 34-45 per cent and coal-fueled thermoelectricity sources will occupy 23 per cent in 2010, according to the corporation.

To realise the objective, EVN has built 14 hydropower plants in the last two years and will start work on a series of other plants this year.

EVN has also worked out plans to supply power to 1,000 households of ethnic minority people in five central highlands provinces at an estimated cost of VND736 billion.
