ABB Vietnam has now become a reliable partner of cutting-edge robotic technology and innovative solutions in smart manufacturing for big customers. Vietnam Business Forum Magazine has conducted an interview with Mr. Huynh Phong Phu, Director of Robotics and Discrete Automation at ABB Vietnam.
Currently, the number of Vietnamese customers using ABB technological solutions has increased dramatically. Could you please tell us about your customers in the mechanical engineering industry?
Upgrading the production system to automation and robotization has now become an extremely urgent requirement to meet manufacturers’ needs for increased productivity, better product quality and to reduce costs to enhance competitiveness. That is the reason why the number of Vietnamese customers using ABB technological solutions has increased significantly.
Particularly in the mechanical engineering industry, in order to meet rising production demand driven by foreign investment, to ensure high requirements on precision and uniformity, Vietnamese companies have now started investing in modern machinery and installing robots in production lines to stabilize both productivity and quality in production.
What is the concept of smart factory described in manufacturing and mechanical engineering sectors?
At ABB, we use the term “Factory of the future” for manufacturing in the future. I would like to list some typical qualities of “Factory of the future” that support manufacturing and mechanical engineering.
Simplification:
Managing increased automation complexity.
Removing entry barriers for many new robot users.
Speeding launch time and efficiency
Collaboration:
Increasing the flexibility of people and automation systems
Unlocking entirely new applications
Balancing the imperative for safety with the need for productivity
Digitalization:
Efficiency through the entire lifecycle: design, build, operate and maintain
Actionable and proactive intelligence for greater reliability
Connecting islands of automation across plants and enterprises
Most Vietnamese businesses are SMEs, how have you supported them to participate in global supply chains?
Currently, ABB Vietnam has developed connections with associations to support manufacturers. Getting closer to them means ABB Vietnam can deliver better solutions to their production, thus supporting them with best investment costs on the value received when they use our products.

What products will you showcase at the upcoming METALEX Vietnam 2019?
Attending METALEX Vietnam 2019, we will bring our “factory of the future” model where robots work together to form a fully automated production chain. Customers will have the chance to experience ABB's cutting-edge technologies from a system perspective rather than a separate application.
We will also demonstrate the remote connectivity feature of ABB Ability Connected Services. All robotic activities in the exhibition will be monitored directly in the most detailed level.
And, also at ABB booth, customers will self-assess benefits of robots and receive our direct expert advice on application in their own manufacturing activities.
Thank you very much!
