The government has approved an investment project to build a VND2.4 trillion (US$150 million) water supply system for Hanoi and northern Ha Tay province.
The system, capable of supplying 600,000 cu.m of clean water a day, will serve a chain of urban areas namely Son Tay, Hoa Lac, Xuan Mai, Mieu Mon, Ha Dong and give an additional water source to Hanoi.
When the first phase of the project is completed in June 2006, the system will provide 200,000 cu.m of clean water a day to Hanoi and 100,000 cu.m a day to industrial zones in western Hanoi.
The second phase is scheduled to end in 2010 and by 2020, the system will raise its capacity to 1.2 million cu.m per day.
Vietnam now reports 80 per cent of urban population and 58 per cent rural people gaining access to safe water. It targets to bring clean water to all residents by 2020.
