Vietnam Needs US$38Bln to Build North-South Express Railway by 2025

Vietnam will spend an estimated VND603.75 trillion (US$38 billion) building the first trans-national express railway linking the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from now to 2025, according to the Construction Consultancy and Investment Co. under the Vietnam Railway Corp. (VRC), the project designer.

Of the total investment, the country will spend VND285 trillion (US$18. million) for the first phase between 2005-2015 and VND318.75 trillion (US$20.17 million) for the second phase between 2016 and 2025.

Covering an estimated area of 8,500 ha, the express railway will have five routes, including one route linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and four connecting the two major economic centers with surroundings areas.

The two kinds of railway, which are designed to have double sizes, independent barriers and are electrified, specialize in serving 200-350 km/h trains.

Express trains are required to use locomotives, which have capacities of more than 12,000CV.

VRC also recommended building a high-speed railway network, including four routes such as Hanoi-Dong Dang, Ho Chi Minh City-Haiphong, Ho Chi Minh City-Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho. After 2020, the country will build some additional routes like Hanoi-Yen Bai, Hanoi-Ha Long and the 400-km double Central Highlands Railway.

The corporation expects to build Hanoi-Vinh and Nha Trang- Ho Chi Minh City express railway sections and Hanoi-Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City-Vung Tau high-speed railways between 2005 and 2015.

From 2016 to 2025, construction will begin on the Vinh-Nha Trang express railway section and Hanoi-Lang Son and Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho high-speed railways.

Experts estimated it would cost some US$20 million for each kilometer of the express railway and US$15 million for the high-speed railway.

They also said that the project would take Vietnam 20-30 years although the country currently plans to have a Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City express railway by 2020.

The Vietnam Railway Department expects to complete the pre-feasibility study of the project in 2010, build Hanoi-Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City-Nha Trang sections in the 2011-2015 period and complete the whole route in 2020.
