Juniper Networks: Concentrating on Security and Broadband-based Services

Juniper Networks, established in 1998, is now considered as a leader in enabling secure, assured communications over a single IP network. The company has won the trust of many telecommunication service providers, governmental organisations, institutes and educational establishments. On the sideline of the Vietnam Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Finance 2005, organised by the International Data Group (IDG) and the Ministry of Finance, VIB Forum interviewed Ha Huy Hao, general director of Juniper Networks Vietnam, about the company’s activities in Vietnam.

What do you think about the Vietnamese market and the development potential of Juniper in Vietnam?
Despite great progress in the Vietnamese ICT market, the demand seems much higher than the supply. Therefore, the market still remains open for enterprises, which provide ICT solutions and products. With small and medium-sized enterprises accounting for 90 per cent of Vietnam’s total number of enterprises, ICT service providers should ensure suitable strategies to access these enterprises.
As far as I am concerned, the market for broadband-based technologies and services in Vietnam will see a rapid development in the coming years. This will be a momentum for Juniper to further expand activities in this large market of over 80 million people.
Since our early days, we have concentrated on broadband-based core networking technologies, so we have a good deal of potential to develop in Vietnam. Juniper’s greatest success is in post and telecommunication, which can be seen via our co-operation with the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT) in building Vietnam’s telecommunication transmission network.

What do you think about security in taxation and customs services of Vietnam? How can Juniper support Vietnam?
I think the Vietnamese financial sector’s database and information system has become greater and greater but back-up, security and assurance have yet to match the requirements of information storage and security. Therefore, from now on, the financial sector should develop concrete solutions for each field, in particular taxation and customs services to avoid future incidents when Vietnam joins the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Despite specialising in routing and information security, we think that there should be more companies offering security services, so as to allow customers in general and taxation and customs services in particular, to have more options. Each company offers various products and according to their own requirements, users can select networks suitable with their capability. For example, a small sized company does not have a security requirement as high as large-sized ones, so they can use small networks. However, such important agencies as the Ministry of Finance should use large networks with better security and assurance standards.

Juniper Networks provides the best support in information and networking security. So far, Juniper Networks has opened a training centre in Vietnam, that is, Hanoi CTT. This is a high-end training centre, which trains experts only.

What are the development orientations of Juniper Networks?
In the coming time, Juniper will concentrate on three fields, including technologies and core networking equipment for telecommunication service providers, technologies and equipment for broadband access and security solutions for end-users.

In Vietnam’s telecommunication system, transmission lines are considered to be very important. People ask about the coverage of transmission lines and security requirements. In the future, broadband will cover the whole Vietnamese territory. As a result, more applications will be needed. It will require an expansion of bandwidth to meet the increasingly high demand for more applications. Juniper is here to meet such a demand.

In its long-term strategy, the local financial sector will prioritise the development of a unique information and data management network in Vietnam with high security and assurance requirements. The major short-term issue is how to find suitable solutions for this model. We hope to contribute to the development of the Vietnamese financial sector and the Vietnamese economy as a whole.
