VNPT Invests US$194.5Mln to Develop Telephone Services in Rural Areas

The State-run Vietnam Posts and Telecoms Corp. (VNPT), the larges post and telecoms service provider in Vietnam, has invested VND3,073 billion (US$194.5 million) to develop telephone services in rural areas between 1999 and 2005.
 
The money is mainly used to extend telephone lines to rural communes and build communal post offices.
 
After seven years, 98 per cent of the country’s total communes have telephone services and 90 per cent of communes have access to daily newspapers. Besides, 7,711 new communes have post offices, 35 per cent of which have connection with internet services.
 
VNPT targets to bring telephone services to all communes in the nation by the end of this year.
 
VNPT has so far signed up 12 million telephone subscribers, raising the tele-density in Vietnam to 14.6 phones for every 100 residents. The figure includes over 6.5 million mobile phone subscribers of its Vinaphone and MobiFone networks.
