The World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay in northern Quang Ninh province received more than 1.2 million tourists with over one half of them being foreigners in the first ten months of this year.

The remarkable success is partly attributed to the local authorities’ efforts in preserving and upgrading the spectacular caves and grottos in thousands of limestone mountains that dot the seascape, and by also improving the bay environment.

Moreover, the relevant agencies have organized regular training courses on rescue skills for relief workers and distributed brochures named “Protecting Ha Long Bay is protecting ourselves” to tourists and local school children.

In a related development, the provincial Trade Union on November 12 inaugurated the four-star Grand Halong Hotel at Bai Chay site with total investment of VND50 billion (US$3.16 million).

Ha Long Bay, or the Bay of Descending Dragon, 165 km northeast of Hanoi was twice recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, one for its magnificent natural landscape in 1994 and the other for its geological and topographical value in 1998.
