France Contributes to Bird Flu Prevention
Responding the call of the World Health Organisation, the World Animal Veterinary Organisation, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on raising an EUR 80 million fund for applying measures to fight bird flu, at a conference on bird flu prevention in Geneva from November 7-9, 2005, France decided to contribute EUR 10 million to help the application of emergency measures issued by the World Health Organisation, the World Animal Veterinary Organisation, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. France is sending ten experts to help regions around the world in the case of an outbreak of the epidemic.
It will ask its medical and veterinary experts to help countries with bird flu carry out programmes on the epidemic prevention. It has mobilised its research centres, such as the Pasteur Institute, the Institute for Research and Development (IRD) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) to help develop strategies on fighting bird flu worldwide.
On this occasion, the French minister of health and solidarity, Xavier Bertrand, will visit Hanoi on November 20, 2005 to attend bilateral dialogues about health.
