On November 26, 2005, the FPT Nursery was opened in Ho Chi Minh City. The enterprise nursery, which is commonly seen in developed countries, is seen as a crucial step in building an enterprise and entrepreneur force that Vietnam does not currently pay due attention to. At this event, Vietnam Business Forum had a talk with Mr. Hoang Minh Chau - FPT deputy general director and director of FPT branch in Ho Chi Minh City.
Can you give us some grounds for the opening of the FPT nursery?
In a business trip to China, I met a young female director who ran a 70-staff software company. “Did you inherit your company,” I asked. She smiled and said her family had no bonds in her company, explaining that a Chinese business association guided her to develop her company. A representative of that association visited her when she had just finished university with the best study result. He proposed that she set up an enterprise, gave her advice and guided her on how to run the enterprise. Surprised, I asked how had borrowed money from banks. She said, at that time, Chinese banks had changed their notions toward borrowers. They put their trust in talented young generations as human beings were more important than properties and houses.
I think talent needs training and discovering. They should have environments to develop their outstanding abilities, and more importantly, they need good nurseries. FPT is a leader and pioneering group in the IT sector; therefore, we built this Nursery in order to create a favourable environment to help “gifted seeds” to grow. They will be the backbone of the FPT’s IT engineers.
How are good “seeds” discovered and selected?
We select students with excellent study results and young people who win IT awards. In addition, we also choose self-confident, ambitious and FPT-loving young people. We want to share our experience in building and developing FPT with ambitious and determined people who are ready to encounter and overcome difficulties to succeed in business. After the “Beginning business with FPT” class jointly organised and lectured by VCCI and FPT, our young friends can discover how to draw up a business plan. Feasible and potential projects will be chosen to bring to the Nursery by the FPT Appraisal Council.
In the FPT Nursery, how will young talent be supported?
After a project is ratified by the FPT Appraisal Council, it will be done in two phase. The first phase (six months in maximum) is the testing and market research phase. The project will be funded with some US$5,000. Apart from financial support, FPT will help our young friends to sketch up business strategies, commercial strategies, technological plans and management methods. The results in this phase will be the grounds for the FPT Appraisal Council to decide against the stoppage or extension of the project. In the second phase (12 months), FPT will donate more capital to help complete the organisation apparatus, stabilise production, boost advertisement activities and develop agent networks to sell products. After the second phase is completed, the two sides will hold discussions over the formation of the project. The project can be admitted to FPT as a subsidiary or operated as an independent company.
In case a project wants to operate as an independent company, without bonds to FPT, will FPT feel regret because its nursery and tending hasn’t produced fruit? Is FPT considering some ties to hold onto talented young people and their projects?
If a project wants to be sepapate from FPT after it becomes successful, it must return the property, capital and efforts of FPT. All can be treated as stakes of FPT in that project. If the project has sufficient investment capital to acquire FPT stakes, FPT will still support it. However, being a member of FPT is better because FPT is a well-known company, which has close relations with world-leading firms and has a wide distribution network and a large volume of customers.
Can you tell us about the initial results of the nursery?
The FPT Nursery was introduced in early 2005. Until now, there are three operational projects involved in television services (FPT Media), training (FPT Dong Du Japanese Center) and online music (FPT Music). FPT Music has finished two phases and become an affiliate of the FPT Telecom. By early 2006, the remaining projects will finish the nursery stages. They can operate as units of FPT or independent companies. At the moment, the FPT Nursery has three other projects, namely a Real Estate Group, Game Plaza Group and Online Tendering Group. These three projects have been ratified by the FPT Appraisal Council and are preparing for the first phase.
