Vietnamese Tea Seeks to Further Penetrate into US Market
Distinctive products and trademarks could help Vietnam crack the ‘health conscious’ US tea market, said Deputy President of the Vietnam Tea Association (VITAS) Tran Van Gia in a tour to the US to seek business opportunities with tea importers there.
During the tour, VITAS has attended a discussion on Vietnamese tea culture and enterprise trademarks with potential counterparts.
President of the US Tea Association Joseph P. Simrany said at the discussion that although the US market has potential, tea enterprises should highlight specific characteristics to help customers distinguish Vietnamese tea products as unique.
The US is a relatively new market for Vietnamese tea, importing only about 2,000 tons a year. The country's revenue for total tea consumption is nearly US$3 billion annually, with the health benefits of drinking tea contributing to increasing sales in the US, he said.
Simrany also said that Vietnam had potential to develop tea production for export. However, Vietnamese tea enterprises should have their specific characteristics to help customers distinguish their products from other countries' products.
Vietnam’s total annual tea output is at 140,000 tons, including 100,000 tons exported to 65 countries and territories, helping Vietnam become one of the 10 leading tea producers and exporters in the world.
Vietnamese tea enterprises also plan to take part in the World Tea Expo in the US, which is scheduled for March 27-29, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The VITAS delegation plans to travel to Philadelphia, Washington DC and Boston before wrapping up their tour on December 18.
