US Firm to Build Coal-fueled Power Plant in Northern Vietnam
The US’s leading power company AES and the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) will start construction of a 1,000-MW coal-fueled power plant in the coal-rich northern province of Quang Ninh in July next year.
The plant will be built under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) form and is scheduled for operation in 2010.
Total investment for the project is estimated at around US$1 billion and AES will contribute 90 per cent of the sum.
The State-run Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) estimated that Vietnam will face electricity shortages of 1.1 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2006, 10.3 billion kWh in 2009, and 7.2 billion kWh in 2010.
AES is one of the world’s leading power companies, supplying power to millions of people in 27 countries on five continents: North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
