The International Garment Training Center (IGTC), the first of its kind in Vietnam, was inaugurated in Ho Chi Minh City recently with an aim to help the garment sector improve its capacity in production management, marketing and merchandising and human resource management.

The center, a VND3.4 billion (US$215,189) joint venture between 13 garment producers and one equipment supplier in Ho Chi Minh City, will receive assistance from the Mekong Private Sector Development Facility (MPDF), the multilateral Sponsor Program run by the International Financial Company (IFC) and the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Garment, Textile, Embroidery and Knitting.

The MPDF pledged to provide the center with technical assistance for three years. The New Zealand Agency of International Development (NZAID) and Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) will send experts to help run the center.

The IGTC will train medium-level managers in fields such as marketing, sales, production, personnel management, production quality control and offer consultation for garment and textile companies. The garment industry is now Vietnam's second biggest hard currency earner after crude oil. It also creates stable jobs for more than 2 million workers, especially women. The country’s garment export turnover is expected to surpass US$5 billion this year, compared with US$4.84 billion last year. The figure is also expected to reach US$9-10 billion in 2010.
